First of all, we’ll mention that a healthy mouth is the one we can eat with, speak and smile with no problem in our daily life, thus we should not be ashamed for our mouth general state.
A healthy mouth means having all our teeth without dental cavities, our gums in good health and do not have any kind of mobility in our teeth. Now, the fact that we use some type of dental bridges or prosthesis as fixed prosthesis, removable or fixed by implant, doesn’t mean that our mouth is not healthy, for us a healthy mouth is the one with you can make your normal activities having a good aesthetic, good breath and the most important, to eat and speak confidently.
Healthy mouth We observed a pink pale gum without any inflammation and totally adhere to the teeth.
Healthy Gums
Literally the word “periodontium” means “around the tooth”. The periodontal diseases are bacterial infections of the gum that destroys the adhesion fibers and the support bone which keeps the teeth in the mouth. The main cause of these diseases is the bacterial plaque (sticky film); colorless that is formed constantly on the teeth. The daily oral home care, including proper brushing and flossing, is necessary to prevent plaque accumulation.
If plaque is not removed, in less than two days, it can be turned into a hard substance called calculus (tartar, sediment). The calculus is so hard that can be only removed with professional cleaning. If the calculus is formed under the root of the tooth, it causes the plaque removal to be more difficult, causing you high risk of getting periodontal disease.
Toxins produced by bacteria in the plaque irritate the gums, causing infection. These toxins can also destroy the support tissue around the teeth, including bone.
When all these happen, the gum separates itself from the teeth; pockets are created and are filled with more plaque and infection. As the disease grows, pockets are deeper and more tissue and bone are destroyed, and teeth become eventually loose. If periodontal disease is not treated, teeth have to be removed.
Periodontic disease can affect one or more teeth. For example, your front teeth maybe do not show any sign of periodontal disease, whereas a back tooth can become loose due to a severe progression of the disease.
Many forms of periodontal disease exist. Those most common are:
Gingivitis
The less severe form of periodontal disease. Gingivitis causes the gum to redness, become inflamed and they bleed easily. Normally, there is little or no annoyance at this stage. Gingivitis is reversible if it is treated by a periodontist, performing a good cleaning, it disappears and with a good oral care at home.
We observe The redness gum, inflamed and bleeding.
Gingivitis
Slight, moderate and severe periodontitis
If gingivitis is not treated, it can turn into a periodontitis. In this stage the periodontal disease begins destroying bone and tissue that supports the teeth; this causes dental mobility, bite changes and the lost of all the teeth.
Moderate periodontitis
Moderate periodontitis
The most advanced types of this disease, present a great bone lost. Teeth in general, become loose, At this stage the periodontist must try to save all the teeth, although, if the patient realizes that he has the disease and lets it to advance for a long time, sometimes, teeth that present to much mobility must be removed.
