Here you can find a conditions or circumstances list that can be considered rather unfavorable (contraindications) or favorable (indications) for implants reconstruction.

Please, keep in mind that a contraindication does not necessarily mean that implants can not be placed. In our context, a contraindication can indicate a lower rank than the optimal success rank in oral implants.

Indications

Generally any edentulous area (with no teeth) can be an indication for dental implants. A decision must be taken, rather it is a good idea based on requirements and expectation of the patients, the amount of additional procedures required (bone graft, etc) the doctor’s ability level and the long term prognosis.

It is generally a good idea to assume that an area without teeth can be considered an implant site in the future; nevertheless your doctor will give you more information about treatments options, the most conventional ones will be the best choice on your individual situation.

Contraindications

Many patients that seem to have suitable bone and space could not necessarily agree with the criteria of being an optimal implant candidate.Patients with endocrinal disorders, such as; uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. A control diabetic patient is a good candidate. Pituitary and other kidney insufficiencies and hypothyroidism could experiment considerable healing problems.

Patients with uncontrolled granulomatous diseases, such as; tuberculosis and sarcoidosis, they could also have a poor healing response to surgical procedures.

Patients with cardiovascular diseases, such as: arteriosclerosis with angina, aortitis with high aortic insufficiency, aortic aneurysms, normally, they have not healing problem, but can affect a problem in the selected surgery handling.

Patients with osseous diseases, such as: histiocytosis x, Paget`s disease and fibrous dysplasia, can not be good implants candidates, because it exists a high risk of implant failure due to a poor osseointegration.

Finally, patients with uncontrolled hematological disorders, such as: generalized anemias, hemophilia (factor VIII deficiency), factor IX, X and XII deficiencies and any other coagulation acquired disorder are contraindicated to surgical procedures, due to little hemorrhage control.

Smoker patients, a greater risk of failure exists, but this does not mean that it is an absolute contraindication for implants placement and success in the long term.
